Visiting from out of town?
Make it a fun day by grabbing some food and catching the sunset. Here’s some recommendations of places to visit within walking distance of the salon.
Vintage Shops
Goods News Vintage, Hoity Toity, and The Closet are all a great time and within walking distance of each other. Costume World isn’t always open, but when it is, it’s a pretty epic old costume rental shop. Take a peek and buy a clown nose or something.
Cafe Farina
An italian joint with a great patio in the summer and a great bar in the colder months. My spot for a good cocktail and some calamari. If you have a strong enough drink on the patio when the church bells go off across the street, you can squint really hard and pretend you’re in Europe.
Ritz Club
This place has a good retro bar and locally famous greasy burger
Leed’s
Leed’s is directly across the street from the salon. If you come on a Saturday, take advantage of the patio and brunch menu. Have a bloody mary and waltz across the street to your appointment.
Bartlett’s Fish Camp
Great spot for a beer and some fish tacos. Located in the harbor with a laid back vibe, and close to the lighthouse if you want to walk the pier afterwards.
Matey’s
Matey’s is just really silly. Its a pirate themed biker bar that makes you feel like you’re in Florida. This is a funny spot to perch on the second floor rooftop and people watch. And maybe get some fried pickles.
Lighthouse Museum
This is a tiny museum in the old lighthouse, near Bartlett’s fish camp, and a cool look into Michigan City’s history.
Michigan City Library
The library is across the street from the salon and it’s worth popping in for a few minutes. It is an architectural landmark built in the 70’s of transculent fiberglass. Its like reading in a green house!
The Beach
All of the beaches along The Dunes National Lakeshore are great, but the closest access to the salon would be parking at Washington Park and walking over.
Hiking
These are not within walking distance of the salon, but are places you can stop to and from if you want to get in your steps in the sand. The Dunes National State Park has lots of trailheads near the visitors center. Mount Baldy has a lot of trails as well and is usually less busy.
Weekenders
There is so much to do in Michiana! If you are staying for a whole weekend, or passing through on your way to Michigan, there are plenty of other recs I can give you- just ask!
